What is LEED®?
The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) developed a system to "define and measure green buildings." The USGBC is "coordinating the establishment and evolution of a national consensus effort to provide the industry with tools necessary to design, build, and operate buildings that deliver high performance inside and out." (LEED® NC 2.2 Reference Guide).
"The LEED® Green Building Rating System is a voluntary, consensus-based, market-driven building rating system based on existing proven technology. It evaluates environmental performance from a whole building perspective over a building's life cycle." (LEED® NC 2.2 Reference Guide)
“The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC®) is a 501(c)(3) non profit composed of leaders from every sector of the building industry working to promote buildings and communities that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work.” (USGBC®)
LEED for Homes® is a rating system that promotes the design and construction of high-performance green homes. A green home uses less energy, water and natural resources; creates less waste; and is healthier and more comfortable for the occupants. Benefits of a LEED® home include lower energy and water bills; reduced greenhouse gas emissions; and less exposure to mold, mildew and other indoor toxins. The net cost of owning a LEED® home is comparable to that of owning a conventional home.
